Common questions
Things people ask us a lot.
If something feels unclear or worrying, the answer is probably here. If not, send us a message — we're always happy to explain anything in plain English.
How do I know this isn't a scam? I've never met you.+
Fair question, and a healthy one to ask. A few concrete reasons you can trust this is real: (1) All payments go through PayFast (in South Africa) or Stripe (internationally) — same systems used by every major shop you've ever bought from online. We never see your card details. (2) You pay half to start, half only after you've seen and approved the finished site. You're never paying for something you haven't seen. (3) We have a written refund & no-surprises guarantee covering exactly what happens if anything goes wrong. (4) You can see real past projects we've shipped, including the live Kindredd Health ecosystem. (5) If you'd like a quick 15-min chat any time, you can book one straight from your project workspace or from the pricing page. We're real people, in South Africa, and we'd rather over-prove that than have you nervous.
What if you disappear mid-project?+
It's rare, but it does happen with bad freelancers — so here's exactly what protects you. (1) If we miss agreed deliverables for more than 24 hours without explaining, you can claim a written refund for the work not done. (2) All your accounts (hosting, domain, Shopify, etc.) are in your name from day one — you can hire someone else without any handover from us. (3) You keep every partial deliverable we've already sent. None of it gets locked away. Full details on the guarantee page.
Do I really never have to get on a call?+
By default, no — every part of working with us happens in writing. That said, since you're hiring someone you've never met, we offer an optional 15-minute confirmation call after you've accepted a quote, just to say hello and confirm you feel good about going ahead. There's also a real-time chat window inside your project workspace — so once we're working together, you can message us back-and-forth without booking anything. The default mode is still writing, but real conversations are there when you want them.
How quickly do you reply?+
Within one working day — usually much sooner during the day. And there's zero expectation for you to reply quickly back. You read, you think, you answer when you're ready. That's the whole point.
What kinds of websites do you make?+
Most kinds! Small business sites, portfolios, landing pages, online shops, members areas, booking systems. We'll choose the right tools for your needs and explain what we're using in plain English — you never need to know the technical names unless you want to.
What does the full web development process look like, from start to finish?+
(1) Brief. You fill in a short form on our site — about 5 minutes, no signup. (2) Quote. Within one working day, we send a fixed quote in plain English: what we're building, how much, how long. (3) Accept. You accept the quote (or send a counter-offer — we negotiate once). (4) Agree your payment plan. Propose a schedule on your brief or after the quote — lump sum, staged, or spread across milestones. Any arrangement works. Secure payment via PayFast (SA) or Stripe (international). (5) Build. We design + develop. You see progress in your own workspace — screenshots, links, notes. You pin feedback on anything you'd like changed. (6) Approve. When you're happy with the staging site, you click Approve. (7) Pay the rest. Final half-payment unlocks handover. (8) Go live. Site goes live on your domain. You get a hand-over note with logins and instructions. (9) Optional care plan. Monthly subscription for ongoing updates, backups, and small changes — cancel any time.
How long does a typical project take?+
It varies a lot. A single landing page can be live in a few days. A small business site is usually 1–2 weeks. A custom Shopify or members-area build can take 4–8 weeks. App-scale projects can stretch over months. We always tell you a realistic range up front in the quote — not the optimistic one.
Do you build in Webflow or write code?+
Both. Webflow is great when you want to edit the site yourself often — drag-and-drop editor anyone can use. Custom code (Next.js or Astro on Vercel) is great when you need something app-like, when you want full ownership, or when you're running a serious online shop. For ecommerce specifically, we usually pair custom Next.js on the front with Shopify in the background — best of both worlds. We'll suggest the right fit in the quote and explain why, in plain English.
Do you build online shops?+
Yes. For most shops we pair a custom-designed site with Shopify running quietly in the background. That means you get a beautiful one-of-a-kind frontend, plus the friendly admin area Shopify is famous for — adding products, managing orders, setting up shipping, all done by you in a few clicks. No technical know-how needed. Why Shopify? Because it handles tax, multi-currency, inventory, shipping zones, and integrations with Courier Guy / BobGo out of the box — far less to maintain than a custom checkout.
Will I be able to edit the site myself after launch?+
Yes. Webflow sites come with a friendly editor anyone can use. Custom-built sites get a CMS layer (Sanity, Shopify, or a simple admin we build) so you can change text, swap images, and update prices without touching code. For anything bigger, there's a "Request a change" button in your project workspace — describe it, we send a small quote, you approve and pay, change ships.
What about hosting? Do you host my site for me?+
We set up hosting in your name, on accounts you own. For custom sites: Vercel or Netlify (R100–R500/month). For Webflow: Webflow hosting (R350–R900/month). For Shopify: Shopify's own plans (R450–R1,500/month). You pay the host directly. Why your name and not ours? So if you ever move on from us, you can take everything with you — no hostage situations.
Will my site be fast and SEO-friendly?+
Yes — every site we ship comes with SEO basics done: a sitemap, robots.txt, schema markup, Open Graph images for social sharing, fast loading, and proper meta tags. That's the foundation Google needs to understand your site. Ongoing SEO work — writing new content every month, building links, paid search — is a separate retainer we can chat about if you're interested.
What if I want to change something after we've started?+
Easy. Inside your project workspace there's a Request a change button. Describe what you'd like; we send a fixed price; you approve and pay; we ship it. If you're on a monthly care plan, smaller changes usually come out of your included hours first — so often there's nothing extra to pay at all.
Can you also help with branding, logos, and content?+
Yes — UXN Design Studio is a product design studio first, web development second. We can handle brand strategy, logos, colour palettes, typography, brand voice, and even writing the copy on your site. If you don't have a brand yet, we'll build one alongside the site for an additional fee. If you do, we'll respect it. Either way, just mention it on your brief.
What's a 'headless' Shopify? Should I care?+
Short version: regular Shopify = you use Shopify's built-in storefront themes, which all kind of look similar. Headless Shopify = Shopify still runs your products, orders, and shipping (so you keep the friendly admin you'd use anyway) but the customer-facing site is fully custom-designed and looks one-of-a-kind. We use this for serious ecommerce clients who want a beautiful site and Shopify's rock-solid checkout + inventory. You don't need to understand the technical bits — we'll just suggest it if it fits.
What happens when something breaks?+
If you're on a monthly care plan: we notice (uptime monitoring) before your customers do, fix it quickly, no extra charge for the fix. If you're not on a care plan: message us, we'll quote a one-off fix. Critical issues — site down, payment broken, security alert — we treat as emergencies regardless. Honest answer: most "breakages" are tiny things like an expired domain or a third-party plugin update; the care plan is mostly worth it for the peace of mind.
Will my site work on phones?+
Always. Every site we build is designed mobile-first — phones and tablets are checked at every stage, not as an afterthought. We test on real devices before launch, not just in a browser's "responsive" preview.
Do you do mobile apps too?+
Yes — UXN Design Studio designed and built the Kindredd Health iOS and Android apps, available on the App Store and Google Play. Native app projects are a much bigger undertaking than a website, both in time and cost. Pricing for native apps starts from R499,999 and goes up from there depending on scope. If that's what you need, mention it on your brief and we'll start a separate conversation. For lightweight app-like experiences, we also build progressive web apps (PWAs) — websites that install onto the home screen, work offline, and feel app-y — at normal website prices.
Who actually does the work? Is this just one person?+
UXN Design Studio is a small studio led by Chinazo, with a network of trusted collaborators we bring in when a project needs specific skills (illustration, copywriting, motion design, advanced backend). On every project, you'll have one main point of contact in writing, in your workspace. No agency-style account managers or hand-offs.
How do I pay?+
In South Africa: through PayFast — card, EFT or Instant EFT, all in ZAR. Internationally: through Stripe — the same system Apple, Amazon and most major sites use. Either way, you get a clear receipt by email. We never see your card details. If you'd like to spread the cost, you can propose a payment plan on the brief form or after the quote — we'll agree it in writing before anything starts.
Can I set my own payment plan?+
Yes. Propose a schedule that works for you — on the brief form or after you receive the quote. Lump sum, two stages, monthly milestones: any arrangement is fine. The only condition is that the full project amount is paid before we hand over the final files and go live. We agree the schedule in writing before we start, so there are no surprises on either side.
Who owns the site when it's done?+
You do, completely. The website is yours. The design is yours. The files are yours. If one day you'd like to move it somewhere else or work with someone else, you can take everything with you — no hostage situation.
What happens if I change my mind partway through?+
We'll be honest with you. Your first payment covers the early work (planning and the first design); if you cancel before we've delivered that, you'll get most of it back. After that, refunds get trickier, but you'll always keep whatever we've made for you so it's not wasted. We'll figure out something fair — in writing, like everything else.
Can I cancel a monthly care plan whenever I want?+
Yes — there's a single cancel button in your account. No notice period, no email-to-cancel routine, no awkwardness. Your site keeps working; you just stop being on the plan.
